More than 100 works by 50 accomplished and up-and-coming Western New York artists will be showcased at the eleventh biennial exhibition Art in Craft Media 2009 (formerly known as Craft Art Western New York). The juried and invitational exhibition is presented by The Burchfield Penney Art Center at Buffalo State College and supported by the Sylvia L. Rosen Endowment. What: Call for Nominations: 2010 Distinguished Alumnus Award

The Buffalo State Alumni Association welcomes nominations from faculty and staff for the 2010 Distinguished Alumnus Award, presented annually at commencement. This is a very prestigious honor awarded to alumni who meet the following criteria: (1) Significant achievement and recognition in their field; (2) Dedication to community service, civic affairs, and volunteerism on a local, state, national, or international level; and (3) Demonstrated ongoing support for and loyalty to the college and its mission. A maximum of three awards may be presented each year (no posthumous awards are given) and all nominations are active for three years, including the initial year of nomination. Recipients must be able to attend the commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 15, 2010. This is a wonderful opportunity to recognize an outstanding graduate who has demonstrated significant career and service achievements that have really made a difference in our world. The deadline for 2010 nominations is Friday, December 11, 2009. The Kidney Early Evaluation Program (KEEP) is a free health screening program offered by the National Kidney Foundation to detect kidney disease. The program is for individuals at high-risk, including people with diabetes, high blood pressure, and those who have a parent, brother or sister with diabetes, high blood pressure, or kidney disease. The screening, provided by certified medical professionals, includes blood pressure and weight measurements and blood and urine tests to check for hypertension, diabetes, and kidney disease. ?Early diagnosis and treatment of kidney disease allow one to get prompt therapy and prolong the life of their kidneys,? said Rocco C. Magnus Martensson, former UB professor of music and conductor turned comedian is back! Combining classical music and humor in the tradition of Victor Borge, Martensson will perform his own brand of music and comedy as the 2009-2010 North American Tour of "Excuse me, does my piano count as one carry-on?" Martensson will perform Saturday, November 7 at 8 p.m. at Lippes Concert Hall in Slee Hall on University at Buffalo's North Campus. THE CONCERT A must-see for music and comedy enthusiasts alike, classical piano music and hilarious comedy will share the stage when former UB professor Magnus Martensson performs at UB's Slee Hall on Saturday, November 7th. The performance will include music by Franz Liszt, Edvard Grieg, Philip Glass, as well as a one man piano/violin rendition of Vivaldi's The Four Seasons. The concert will include some serious music, as well as old-fashioned silliness of the kind you can see Martensson perform at the United Nations on YouTube.
